Welcome to The Style File, a showcase of some of Australia's most talented book illustrators. This site is an initiative of the Australian Society of Authors, initially supported by the Australia Council for the Arts. It was originally developed by the SoBI crew and ASA staff, in collaboration with Marks Design, The Edit Shop and Books Illustrated. It has been redesigned using funds from the Mouni Sadhu bequest. All illustrations on the site are copyright to the creators.
The Style File showcases the work of different book illustrators through portfolio pages. Each illustrator's profile displays examples of illustrative styles and techniques. You'll also find information about the illustrators' publications and specialty areas.
To search for a particular style or technique, use the filters available at Genres & Styles (above). You can also search for specific illustrators, listed alphabetically or by specialty (above).
The Style File will continually grow and develop as more artists come on board. Please look at the information about the site — so that you are familiar with all that the Style File has to offer.
If you are an illustrator and would like to join The Style File, please see submission guidelines under Apply (above).
Welcome aboard — we hope you come back to visit us regularly.
The Style File selectors
All illustrations on the website are selected by Ann James and Erica Wagner.
In a career spanning over 30 years, Ann James has illustrated over 70 books. Since 1988, Ann and her partner Ann Haddon have run Books Illustrated in Melbourne, specialising in promoting picture books and their creators through exhibitions in Australia and overseas. She enjoys mentoring emerging illustrators and encouraging kids to be playful with art materials. Ann has been a director on the Board of the Australian Society of Authors since 1996. She is also a founding director on the Board of the Australian Children’s Literature Alliance whose primary initiative is the Australian Children’s Laureate.
Erica Wagner has worked with books for most of her life, as a bookseller, editor and publisher. She is currently a publisher of books for children and young adults at Allen & Unwin and co-partner in the micro-publishing house, Twelve Panels Press. She began her publishing career with Penguin Books Australia, working with many of Australia’s finest writers and illustrators. After a decade she left Penguin to start up Silverfish, a new children’s list for Duffy & Snellgrove, which was subsequently acquired by Allen & Unwin where she has worked since 2000. In 1999 she was awarded the Beatrice Davis Editorial Fellowship – the first children’s book editor to receive this honour. Illustrated books and graphic novels are particular passions. For the last several years, Erica has been working part-time in publishing while pursuing her own art practice.
